The Evolution of a Star: Britney Spears

Britney Spears appeared in the show 'The Mickey Mouse club' in 1992 after she had been a contestant on the show star search. She stayed with the mickey mouse club show until it was cancelled.
In June 1997 Britney pitched to various record labels, after finally being signed by Jive Records at the age of 16.
From 'Baby one more time'
She briefly joined all girl pop band, Innosense in 1997 but soon broke away to pursue her solo career.
From 'Baby one more time'
Her debut album 'Baby one more time' was released in January 1999. It became the biggest ever selling album by a teenage artist. The video to the single 'baby one more time' also became well known and showed her as a school girl. This video became very famous because of the school setting and outfits and the dancing.
From the single 'Crazy'
From the single 'Crazy'
The single 'Crazy' was released after the album and the video was quite similar, as she was dressed in a waitresses outfit in the beginning and then changes into similar clothes when dancing.
'Oops i did it again' was the next hit single from the album. The video to this song showed a much more sexualised Britney. It was also a change from her previous videos in which she was dressed as someone, catholic schoolgirl/ waitress and then changed into a crop top and baggy trousers.
In 2001 her videos became more narrative and this showed Britney as a more matured woman, 'Lucky' and 'I'm not a girl, not yet a woman.' This also allowed her to change her voice from a 'pop voice' to a more adult and recognizable voice. These screen grabs on the right are taken from the video 'I'm a slave for you' which was released in 2001. Many of her videos from 2000-2004 show her as a sexualised woman, other songs include 'Overprotected', 'Toxic', 'Piece of me', 'Womanizer' and many others. As she became more famous her videos were of a higher budget and included stunts and better settings. Shown in the screengrab on the right below. From 'Toxic' to 'Piece of me' Britney had changed in her videos from being very very sexualised to a less sexualised woman after her rehab and children.
These are screengrabs from toxic, the first two at the top and the bottom two are screengrabs from Piece of me.
Her most recent video 'I wanna go' is a narrative based video with some elements of performance. This is her newest song and shows how she is still continuing to be successful  in her own way. Here are some screengrabs on the left.

Reasons for song choices

Foster the People - Pumped up kicks
We chose this song because we wanted to try and use a song which is not very well known, and the genre is not as big as, for example RnB. Another reason is because this song sounded quite chilled and we thought because it sounded quite free and you couldn't picture anything in particular when listening to it, we could do whatever we wanted to. However once we listened to the song a few times and looked at the lyrics, we found that the meaning wasn't what we originally thought it was. The lyrics resembled a teenage kid getting revenge on his bullies, 'All the other kids with the pumped up kicks, you better run better run, out run my gun.'  So we decided not to use this song as we would be restricted to a more narrative based video and felt that we couldn't achieve what we wanted as a music video for this song.

Lupe Fiasco - Go to sleep
This song was also not very well known which was the first reason we chose it. Even though the artist is well known we found that not many people had heard this song of his in particular. Another reason was because it had a steady beat throughout therefore making it quite simple to edit in terms of which shots should go where and when. However the reason we decided not to use this track was because firstly it was a slow song, therefore the video content would have to be quite interesting to keep the audience watching. We were also struggling with the lyrics and what we would actually do in our video, for this song.

Chris Brown - Beautiful people
This song was the opposite of what our song criteria was, this song was very mainstream, well known and the genre/artist was big. When we were considering this song for our music video we were thinking of what we would do in our music video, one of the main things on our list of song criteria was that we would be able to generate many ideas which we thought would work. Once we listened to this song we had a range of ideas which we were very happy about and thought we could make it happen and it would be a success. However we didn't want go for this song straight away because we had only looked at three songs, so we continued to look. We were also quite worried at the fact it was a very well known song as well, and maybe wasn't the best choice for our music video.

Blackstreet - No diggity
This is what would be considered as an outlier compared to our other choices. The reason we chose this song is because we only had one song in the running for our music video, we then decided to change our criteria slightly and look for older songs that we don't hear as much nowadays. We thought that we could modernise these songs through the video to give it a new look. This wasn't a serious track choice as we know that is is still a very well known and big song, when we gained feedback we realised that it would be hard to do this song justice.

Jack Johnson - Better together
The reason we chose this song is because it completely fits with our song criteria. The artist and the song aren't very well known, we also looked at his record label and found that the artists they sign are within the genre we wanted to do. I personally have listened to Jack Johnson before and he was the perfect fit for us. When we heard the song we weren.t to keen on it as we thought it would be boring, however after a few times of listening to it, we quickly began generating ideas for the video, how we would edit it and what the digipak would look like, because we had such strong ideas for this song and we believed it would work we decided to choose this song.

Possible track for music video

Lyrics:
There's no combination of words
I could put on the back of a postcard
No song I could sing
But I can try for your heart
Our dreams, and they are made out of real things
like a, shoebox of photographs
with sepiatone loving
Love is the answer,
at least for most of the questions in my heart
Like why are we here? and where do we go?
And how come we're so hard?
It's not always easy and
sometimes life can be deceiving
I'll tell you one thing its always better when we're together

Chorus:
MMM its always better when we're together
look at the stars when we're together
its always better when we're together
Yeah, its always better when we're together

And all of these moments
just might find there way into my dreams tonight
But I know that theyll be gone
when the morning light sings
and brings new things
but tomorrow night you see
that theyll be gone too
too many things I have to do
But if all of these dreams might find there way
into my day to day scene
Ill be under the impression
i was somewhere in between
With only two
Just me and you
Not so many things we got to do
or places we got to be
We'll Sit beneath the mango tree

its always better when we're together
Somewhere in between together
its always better when we're together
Yeah, its always better when we're together

MMmmmm MMMmmmm Mmmmmm
I believe in memories
they look so, so pretty when I sleep
Hey now, and when I wake up,
you look so pretty sleeping next to me
But there is no time,
and there is no song I could sing
and there is no, combination of words I could say
but I will still tell you one thing
We're Better together

Goodwin's analysis of Justin Timberlake's 'Cry me a river'

Genre: The genre of the song is pop/R&B as we can tell by the beat and as he is a well known artist with this specific genre.
Visuals and Lyrics:
We can see there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as the song lyrics describe his break up with his ex-girlfriend, the whole video is showing the artist getting revenge on his ex-girlfriend.
The second screengrab shows the video being played on his ex-girlfriends television, so that she will see it when she comes out of the shower. This image could be amplifying the underlying story line, of the artist getting revenge on his ex-girlfriend.

Music and lyrics:
Also in this screen grab there is a link between the music and the the lyrics. This is towards the end of the song, in which there is a sound of a song skipping and the noise is continuously repeated,. This links in with the video of the artist and the brunette woman kissing, as it is also skipping.
Setting and costumes:
This music video is a narrative and the genre is classed as pop/R&B. The setting is linked with the lyrics and narrative of the song. As it is about the artist getting revenge on his ex-girlfriend, it is set at her house as we find out at the beginning of the video.
The costumes shown in these screengrabs (on the left) are of the 3 main characters in the music video. The picture of the artist, on the left, shows that he is wearing all black. Denim jeans, a black hooded zip top, a leather jacket and black shoes. He is in all black which suggests that he does not want to be seen, or rather blend in.
The picture on the far right is of the brunette woman, who came to record a video of her and the artist kissing. In this shot we can see she has taken some of her clothes off, and is sitting on him wearing her bra and jeans. This suggests she could be a stripper as she has no care that he is merely using her.
The screengrab at the bottom of the three is of the ex-girlfriend in the video. She has been made to look like Britney Spears, because the male artist, Justin Timberlake, had recently broken up with her because he found out she cheated on him. We know this video is about the artist getting revenge on his Ex, which is why she is made to look like Britney. We can see she is wearing a hat and clearly has blonde hair which is what Britney use to wear.
The main artist, close ups:
There are many close ups in this song, as they are required by the record company to keep the artist or get the artist well established. Justin Timberlake was quite young at this time (2002) and was becoming quite big within the music industry.
There are 6 different close ups here that I've chosen throughout the video. There are obviously many more but these are the ones I picked out because, they are all in different locations which shows that there are a considerable amount of close ups as they are in different locations.

Voyeurism:
These 4 shots show voyeurism towards the artist's ex-girlfriend in the music video.

Lyrics:
You know what
I like the playettes
No diggity, no doubt
Play on playette
Play on playette
Yo Dre, drop the verse

(Dr Dre)
It's going down, face the Blackstreet
The homies got me, collab' creations
Pump like Athene, no doubt
I put it down, never slouch
As long as my credit can vouch
A dog couldn't catch me saying ouch
Tell me who can stop when Dre making moves
Attracting honeys like a magnet
Giving em eargasms with my mellow accent
Still moving this flavour
With the homies Blackstreet and Teddy
The original rump shakers

(Verse 1)
Shorty in down, good Lord
Baby got em up open all over town
Strictly biz, she don't play around
Cover much grounds, got game by the pound
Getting paid as a forty
Each and every day, true player way
I can't get it out of my mind
I think about the girl all the time

East side to the west side
Pushing phat rides, it's no surprise
She got tricks in the stash
Stacking up the cash
Fast when it comes to the gas
By no means average
As almost she's got the heaven
Baby, you're a perfect ten, I wanna get in
Can I get down, so I can win

1-I like the way you work it
No diggity, I try to bag it up, bag it up

(repeat 1, 1, 1, 1)

(Verse 2)
She's got class and style
Street knowledge by the pow
Baby never act wild
Very low key on the profile
Catching feelings is unknown
Let me tell you how it goes
Curve's the words, spin's the verbs
Lovers it curves so freak what you heard

Going with the phatness
You don't even know what the half is
You gotta pay to play
Just for shorty, bang-bang, to look your way
I like the way you work it
Trumped tight, all day, every day
You're blowing my mind, maybe in time
Baby, I can get you in my ride
(rpt 1...)

(Verse 3)
2-Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo
Hey yo, that girl looks good
Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo
Play on, play on playette
Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo
You're my kind of girl, no diggity
Hey yo, hey yo, hey yo, hey yo
Hey

(Queen Pen)

Cause that smart peeps and we roll jeeps
Flying first class from New York City to Blackstreet
What you know about me, not a motherf.. thing
Crunching ear, wooded frames spotted by my shortie

As for me, icy gleaming pinky diamond ring
We be's the baddest clique up on the scene
Ain't you getting bored with these fake ass broads
I shows and proves, no doubt, I be takin you, so

Please excuse, if I come across room
That's just me and that's how the playettes got to be
Stay kicking game with a capital G
Axe the peoples on my block, I'm as real as can be

Word is bond, faking jacks ain't never been me
Word is bond, faking moves never be my thing
So, Teddy, pass the word to your nigga Johnson
I be sitting in car, let's say around 3:30
Queen Pen and Blackstreet, it's no diggity
(rpt 1, 2)

Lyrics:
[Intro:]
[*yaawn*] - Thanks,
Feels good wakin' up,
Get back... on my J.O.
ooohh,
And you will be going, cause I gotta go to work
It's coo...

[Verse 1:]
I wipe the cold from my eye
Stationed in Antarctica, coldest nigga alive
Flow is Armageddon might smite crows from the Sky
Before you drive you have to wipe locusts off your rides
But I'm warming up, oceans is on the rise
I be Ocean with 11 associates on my side
Colder than Chris Martin guitarin' - would you look at all these Spies?
But they can't see me, I took out their eyes
Replaced them with some me's, so all they see is he's
But I will never run, not even if they cry
See I can never fall, not even down their cheek
But I will always ball, let's see who the first to blink
And I don't need no passwords cause I don't need to cheat
But you can say your last words then you can rest in peace
I'm the hook after your last verse, I'm also like the beat
But I will turn it down so you can go to sleep

[Chorus:]
You can go to sleep
Yes you can go to sleep
Said you can go to sleep [x2]
Good night, good night [x2]
(Real niggas up again)
(Phony niggas tuckin' in)
Now you can go to sleep
Yes you can go to sleep
Now you can go to sleep [x2]
Good night, good night [x2]
Official niggas on they job and you know we gonna ball
Real niggas poppin off, phony niggas not at all

[Verse 2:]
Insomniac since way back, see that's what I been like
Bacon, eggs and pancakes, eating that at midnight
Getting up and going hard, I don't need no Enzyte
Come across as very calm, mental state is Zen like
Always had a lot of heart, never been the tin type
Never will I drop a dime, never been the ten type
My girlfriend is very fine, yeah she is a ten, right?
Mink is dragon on the floor, fire in my windpipe
You should come and clean up after riots that I incite
Things got off the handle, left behind a landfill
Traffic at a standstill, stadium is fan-filled
Fill this bitch up with fans, you still won't blow my candle...out
My can do spirit's in the house, and it's possessing your possessions,
did you hear it by the couch?
Boogeyman under here but not in your closet, cause I'm not a...
Won't drill no door hole, I won't make a peep, so...

[Chorus:]
You can go to sleep
Yes you can go to sleep
Now you can go to sleep
Said you can go to sleep
Good night, good night [x2]
(Real niggas up again)
(Phony niggas tuckin' in)
Now you can go to sleep
Yes you can go to sleep
Now you can go to sleep [x2]
Good night, good night [x2]
Official niggas on they job and you know we gonna ball
Real niggas poppin off, phony niggas not at all

[Verse 3:]
I wipe the cold from my eye, then put it in my stove and hope that my dough rise
And that my clothes dry, but I am so high, I'm sitting on the storm that I got soaked by
Now you can come close so, you can get warm
But you get no pie, but you can sell 'em for him so, here's your bow tie
Now get ready to fall, 'cause humans don't fly, the boy in the balloon
See I didn't go high, and then I'm coming back to flow again
Closed out all that opium, but I had to O-P-EN
They said they need a hero-in it, so I'm back to dope again
Pull up in that old school Flintstone drop on rolling pins
Time is all behind me, this make me feel old again
Grandma's all around me, I can feel her soul within'
Hold my daddy over him
I woke the rooster's, woke the hen's
Everything's cashmere, count the sheep that make 'em..

[Chorus:]
(You can) go to sleep
Yes you can go to sleep
Now you can go to sleep
Yes you can go to sleep
(Go to sleep, it's okay!)
Good night, good night [x2]
(Real niggas up again)
(Phony niggas tuckin' in)
Yes you can go to sleep [x2]
Now you can go to sleep
Yes you can go to sleep
Good night, good night [x2]
Official niggas on they job and you know we gonna ball
Real niggas poppin off, phony niggas not at all

Lyrics:
Robert's got a quick hand.
He'll look around the room, he won't tell you his plan.
He's got a rolled cigarette, hanging out his mouth he's a cowboy kid.
Yeah he found a six shooter gun.
In his dads closet hidden in a box of fun things, and I don't even know what.
But he's coming for you, yeah he's coming for you.

[Chorus x2:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you'd better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet.

Daddy works a long day.
He be coming home late, yeah he's coming home late.
And he's bringing me a surprise.
'Cause dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice.
I've waited for a long time.
Yeah the slight of my hand is now a quick pull trigger,
I reason with my cigarette,
And say your hair's on fire, you must have lost your wits, yeah.

[Chorus x2:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you'd better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet.

[Whistling]

[Chorus x3:]
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you'd better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you'd better run, better run, faster than my bullet.

Adele 'Rolling in the deep' music video analysis

This music video is a narrative, as again this video tells a story however it is not as clear as other videos as it is mainly portrayed in metaphors. The song is a story of a break up. This could also been seen as some sort of performance video as Adele is the focus and only main performer in the video. The genre of this song is soul/rhythm and blues.

The editing of this music video flows with the very strong beat throughout the song. As the beat changes in the chorus, it gets faster, the editing gets faster with it. this strong beat also controls most of the shots in the video.

The mise-en-scene of this video is very dull and a constant contrast between black and white, with quite natural colours as well.

Some of the hidden metaphors in the video relate to the lyrics, this song is about a break up, and with Adele sitting in the chair represents defiance throughout the video.

The constant breaking of the cups and plates represents the constant fighting in the relationship, how regular they are.
In the video we see a dancer, dancing in powder throwing it in the air, this distorts the image and links to the lyrics by showing that the relationship itself is distorted.

In this video like many others there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. Adele is the main focus of the video, and we see many close ups of her.

The visuals are constantly amplifying, illustrating and contradicting the lyrics, however the links between the visuals and lyrics are not blatant and are shown through metaphors.

Chris brown 'I can transform ya' music video analysis

This song is by an artist named, Chris Brown, his songs are mainly RnB, urban, hip hop, pop and soul. This particular song is has more of a RnB and hip hop type of genre.

This music video is a performance based video, featuring Lil Wayne and Swizz Beats. We can see that it is a performance based video as Chris Brown is dancing in most of the video, and the other artists are seen holding instruments.

There are many effects used in this video to illustrate the title of the song, 'I can transform ya'. Many of the effects are various objects such as cars or motorbikes transforming into people or a group of people.

The Lyrics at the end of Chris Brown's first verse, 'red lips, red dress, like em like a fire truck' becomes visual as him and the people he is dancing with transform into a firetruck.

In the video most of the lyrics are put into visuals, by using the title song as the main theme, 'transforming'. Most of the transformations are into cars and motorbikes which are stereotypical of R&B and hip hop songs. Here are some screengrabs showing the objects and transformations.
